There are three species of monkeys in the woods of Makaibari.
The entire farmlands consists of 673 hectares,
the tea is ensconsced within occupying 250 hectares.
Within the woods various species of insects, butterflies,
birds and animals flourish.
No one dares hunt or even capture a butterfly
as the entire community will immediately punish the offender.
Hence the forests are ahaven of breeding for the all life
forms in danger of extinction.
Monkeys flourish too.
The largest monkeys found is the Golden Langur,
a most impressive ape with a black face, golden coat and a two metre tail.
It is a solitary beast and roam the woods singly,
pairing during the mating season.
The other species, although not so impressive
are the rhesus and Assamese Macaque.
Both species roam the woods in troops, with one large male
as the Boss, with the others toeing a strict hierarchial
system of importance.
A few years ago I had the unique experience of witnessing
a war between two separate groups of Assamese Macaque.
During my normal daily farm rounds(which I cover by foot 7/8 kms over
difficult terrain), I was surprised to hear a huge commotion from
the Nayakaman woods in the western sector.
Approaching the source with caution,I was amazed to witness the following.
The mothers of both groups were huddled at asafe distance with their
offspring, whilst the young males screeched horrifically, chasing each other,
tearing leaves from trees, apparently raining blows
( although I could not detect any injury inflicted--it was more a push and
shove and scream--rather than cause pain like man is wont to do in case of a fight).
From my vantage point I watched the proceedings taking care not to disturb their war rituals.
This war raged on for at least 20 minutes.
After a while I realized that one group had accidentally encroached on the territory of
the other--hence this demonstration.
Finally the Boss of the territory,an impressive male,
with a very red face and buttocks calmy walked up to the BOSS
of the infringing group,an equally impressive male, and hurled him
to the ground with a resounding slap.
Immediately, all the noise stopped, the deafeted ape picked himself up slowly
but abjectly, made afew noises gathering his troop and quietly left the site.
Within minutes they were acroos the ridge a few kilometres away,
swinging their way through the branches to their charted place.
It truly was a great experience for me--and realized the wisdom of
their ways to settle their disputes without any grevious harm to another,
exercising their livelihood rights.
I wonder if man will ever evolve to this state of coexistence with
another man who infringes his domain?
I would be grateful for readers to offer an opinion to the question raised.
Till next week may you soar as high as the serpent eagle.
WHEN AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES BECOME ARHYTHM OF NATURE RATHER THAN AN
EXTERNAL IMPULSE OF MAN,THEN THE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES ARE IN HARMONY
WITH NATURAL FORCES AND NOT AGAINST IT
IN ALL CONVENTIONAL AGRICULTURE MAN TRIES TO WIN AGAINST NATURE,
AND THE CREATURE THAT WINS AGAINST THE ENVIRONMENT ULTIMATELY DESTROYS ITSELF.
NATURE SALUTES THE HOLISTIC EFFORTS OF MAN BY EXHIBITING MIMICRY OF
ANY PRINCIPAL CROPS CULTIVATED AS AN APPRECIATION OF MAN'S EFFORTS
TO BE IN ITS TUNE.
THIS IS A TRUE CERTIFICATION.
